Inadequate distribution of dietary protein and muscle mass in older adults

چکیده

OBJECTIVE: To assess protein intake, its distribution across main meals and the relationship between this muscle mass in older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 47 adults attending a community center Campo Grande, MS, Brazil. A sociodemographic questionnaire was used to characterize population. Dietary intake data were collected using two 24-hour dietary recalls on nonconsecutive days. Anthropometric measures handgrip strength collected. Skeletal calculated from anthropometric measures. Descriptive statistics derive means standard deviations. Analysis of variance Tukey tests performed, with significance level 5% (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The adults, mostly Caucasian, female, physically active, at risk malnutrition, low education, had an energy 1305.28 kcal/day. Protein 65.19 g/day, mean 0.93 g/kg/day. Lunch meal highest (33.85 ± 2.47 g). lowest observed breakfast (8.56 0.82 All below recommendation 40 g protein/meal. associated calf circumference = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: consumed amount total per-meal protein. Breakfast showed sample.

Insufficient amounts and inadequate distribution of dietary protein intake in apparently healthy older adults in a developing country: implications for dietary strategies to prevent sarcopenia

BACKGROUND Both low dietary protein intake and inadequate distribution of protein over the three mealtimes have been reported in older Caucasian adults, but the association between protein intake at each meal and muscle mass has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to evaluate dietary protein intake and distribution by mealtimes, and to explore their association with appendicular ske...

The Link between Dietary Protein Intake, Skeletal Muscle Function and Health in Older Adults

Skeletal muscle mass and function are progressively lost with age, a condition referred to as sarcopenia. By the age of 60, many older adults begin to be affected by muscle loss. There is a link between decreased muscle mass and strength and adverse health outcomes such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Data suggest that increasing dietary protein intake at meals may counterbalan...

Protein Considerations for Optimising Skeletal Muscle Mass in Healthy Young and Older Adults

Skeletal muscle is critical for human health. Protein feeding, alongside resistance exercise, is a potent stimulus for muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and is a key factor that regulates skeletal muscle mass (SMM). The main purpose of this narrative review was to evaluate the latest evidence for optimising the amino acid or protein source, dose, timing, pattern and macronutrient coingestion for i...

Dietary protein requirements of younger and older adults.

BACKGROUND For older men and women, the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) and Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein are not known with confidence. Data from the limited research studies available suggest that the EAR and RDA might be greater than the assumed 0.66 and 0.80 g protein x kg body wt(-1) x d(-1), respectively. OBJECTIVE This study assessed the effect of age on the EAR a...

Dietary Protein in Older Adults: Adequate Daily Intake but Potential for Improved Distribution

Daily distribution of dietary protein may be important in protecting against sarcopenia, specifically in terms of per meal amounts relative to a proposed threshold for maximal response. The aims of this study were to determine total and per meal protein intake in older adults, as well as identifying associations with physical activity and sedentary behavior. Three-day food diaries recorded prot...
