In vivo levels of chlorinated hydroquinones in a pentachlorophenol-degrading bacterium.
Sphingomonas chlorophenolica RA-2 is a soil microorganism that can grow on pentachlorophenol (PCP) as a sole carbon source. In this microorganism, PCP is converted to tetrachlorohydroquinone (TCHQ), trichlorohydroquinone, and 2,6-dichlorohydroquinone. The remainder of the pathway has not yet been defined. The ability to grow on PCP as a sole carbon source is remarkable because of the toxicity o...

The isolation of a pure culture of bacteria able to use 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) as a sole source of carbon and energy under aerobic conditions was achieved for the first time. The bacterium was identified as a Pseudomonas sp. and designated ATCC 700113. [2,6-(sup14)C]TCP degradation yielded (sup14)CO(inf2), chloride, and unidentified polar metabolites.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) has long been used as a wood preservative. Because of the adverse environmental effects of PCP, it has widely contaminated soil and groundwater. In treating PCP, a number of bacteria have been isolated from the environment and applied to bioremediate contaminated areas. However, there is some controversy about the efficiency of PCP removal. This controversy originates in...
متن کاملChlorinated dibenzodioxins and pentachlorophenol.
Introduction Pentachlorophenol is a registered anti-microbial agent whose principal use is for the preservation of wood. Typical commercial pentachlorophenol contains a variety of substances which are considered to be "in-active" from the aspect of antimicrobial efficacy. Consequently, pentachlorophenol is sold as an antimicrobial agent with 95%o active ingredients and 5%o "inert" ingredients. ...
