Improving floral nectar storage on filter paper for sugar recovery

چکیده

Nectar analysis has been used to understand pollination systems, but nectar storage methods have rarely considered as potential sources of inaccuracy in the recovery data. Prompt sugar is not always possible and can affect results. We aimed develop an effective method store on filter paper. Nectars from two subspecies Eremophila maculata (Scrophulariaceae) Strelitzia reginae (Strelitziaceae) were spotted papers. redissolved assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography determine masses sugars recovered papers Day 0 30. evaluated effects elution, paper type size, treatments recovery. Liquid nectars also stored refrigerator. Sugars best eluted 15 mL water agitated for 1 min. small tended be more successfully than those larger (significantly glucose). Paper performed better nylon glucose. Desiccant had a marginal positive effect recovery, did refrigeration storage. If highly accurate measurements are needed, should with large volumes desiccant within few days collection.

Floral Nectar Guide Patterns Discourage Nectar Robbing by Bumble Bees

Floral displays are under selection to both attract pollinators and deter antagonists. Here we show that a common floral trait, a nectar guide pattern, alters the behavior of bees that can act opportunistically as both pollinators and as antagonists. Generally, bees access nectar via the floral limb, transporting pollen through contact with the plant's reproductive structures; however bees some...

Nectar Sugar Production across Floral Phases in the Gynodioecious Protandrous Plant Geranium sylvaticum

Many zoophilous plants attract their pollinators by offering nectar as a reward. In gynodioecious plants (i.e. populations are composed of female and hermaphrodite individuals) nectar production has been repeatedly reported to be larger in hermaphrodite compared to female flowers even though nectar production across the different floral phases in dichogamous plants (i.e. plants with time separa...

Nectar: properties, floral aspects, and speculations on origin.

Although nectar is crucial for most pollinators, its evolutionary origin has received scant attention. Nectar is derived from the phloem solution. Both have high sugar concentrations (usually 10-30% solutes by fresh mass); the main solute in the phloem is sucrose, whereas nectar can also contain considerable amounts of fructose and glucose. The phloem, not the xylem, is the supplier of water to...

Micro-organisms behind the pollination scenes: microbial imprint on floral nectar sugar variation in a tropical plant community.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Variation in the composition of floral nectar reflects intrinsic plant characteristics as well as the action of extrinsic factors. Micro-organisms, particularly yeasts, represent one extrinsic factor that inhabit the nectar of animal-pollinated flowers worldwide. In this study a 'microbial imprint hypothesis' is formulated and tested, in which it is proposed that natural com...

Sugar Metabolism in Hummingbirds and Nectar Bats

Hummingbirds and nectar bats coevolved with the plants they visit to feed on floral nectars rich in sugars. The extremely high metabolic costs imposed by small size and hovering flight in combination with reliance upon sugars as their main source of dietary calories resulted in convergent evolution of a suite of structural and functional traits. These allow high rates of aerobic energy metaboli...
