Improvement of Engineering Properties of Asphalt Binder and Mixture by Using SBS Additive Material

Rutting, thermal cracking, and stripping are among the most severe distress types in asphalt pavement. In this study, a specified type of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) was used as modifier for low viscosity binder G80/100 (PG 58-22) to overcome issues distresses mixture. The mixing process had been evaluated by using fluorescent microscopy. control- SBS-modified binders were subjected all conventional Superpave tests. Hamburg wheel tracker (HWT) indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR) tests conducted evaluate engineering properties control modified mixtures. SBS percentages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5% total weight binder. results showed lower penetration, higher softening point, viscosity, elastic recovery. dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) bending beam (BBR) an increasing SBS% leading increase both values high temperatures performance grade (PG). tests’ that highest TSR rutting parameter obtained at 3% SBS, which optimum content mixture resulted is PG76-16.
