چکیده

Abstract In this study, we test the hypothesis that small-scale testing can reduce risk and uncertainty of trying new technologies. We conducted a field experiment, in cluster randomised control trial setting, to examine whether availability divisible packages seeds influences smallholder farmers’ decisions try wheat variety. Our results show adoption newly introduced variety was higher villages where small seed were introduced. find farmers tend experiment on their farmland are less likely adopt as coping mechanism for exposure at stage experimentation. The from treatment heterogeneity reveal supplying bags had differential causal effects individual farmers. intervention which made available impacted relatively younger poorer most. This finding provides an insight into significance delivery improve use varieties by smallholders.

Simulating Strategy Options for Enhancing HYV-Maize Technology Adoption in Oromia, Ethiopia

Using a sample selection induced bivariate probit model fitted to data collected from small scale, resource poor farmers in Western Oromia (Jimma, Ilu-Ababaor, Estern and Western Welega zones), I define and simulate different strategy (Pure and Mixed) scenarios. The scenarios provide the extent to which the adoption of maize technology package (HYV-seeds, fertilizers and planting methods) among...

Microcredit, family planning programs, and contraceptive behavior: evidence from a field experiment in Ethiopia.

The impact of community-based family planning programs and access to credit on contraceptive use, fertility, and family size preferences has not been established conclusively in the literature. We provide additional evidence on the possible effect of such programs by describing the results of a randomized field experiment whose main purpose was to increase the use of contraceptive methods in ru...

Imperfect competition in agricultural markets: evidence from Ethiopia

Drawing upon unique transaction-level data from rural Ethiopia, this paper tests for general forms of imperfect competition among rural wholesale traders. Tests show that traders in a typical source market engage in imperfectly competitive behavior in purchasing from farmers, driving do...
