Importation biological control of invasive fire ants with parasitoid phorid flies—progress and prospects

چکیده
Twenty-two known species of Pseudacteon flies (Diptera: Phoridae) are parasitoids South American fire ants in the Solenopsis saevissima (Smith) complex. Phorid different sizes and with differing activity patterns have been released United States to control two imported ant species—Solenopsis richteri invicta—and their hybrid. Six highly host-specific successfully established at dozens release sites most now widely distributed across areas infested by ants. This complex fly is expected weaken competitive vigor colonies through both direct indirect effects, eventually reduce abundance To date, however, few studies attempted document effect these on host field, future research should focus overall magnitude reduction populations. Knowledge gained from successful importation establishment phorid US can provide guidance for utilization parasitoid biological S. invicta other introduced ranges, aid search additional agents pest general.

متن کاملDispersal Polymorphisms in Invasive Fire Ants.
In the Found or Fly (FoF) hypothesis ant queens experience reproduction-dispersal tradeoffs such that queens with heavier abdomens are better at founding colonies but are worse flyers. We tested predictions of FoF in two globally invasive fire ants, Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius, 1804) and S. invicta (Buren, 1972). Colonies of these species may produce two different monogyne queen types-claust...
متن کاملProspects for Importation Biological Control of the Soybean Aphid: Anticipating Potential Costs and Benefits
We discuss the potential pros and cons of using importation biological control against the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae). Importation of exotic organisms for biological control is never completely risk-free, but the potential negative impacts of not achieving biological control of invasive pests may exceed the risks associated with a biological control introduct...
متن کاملBiological Control of Solenopsis Fire Ants by Pseudacteon Parasitoids: Theory and Practice
Pseudacteon parasitoids are potential biocontrol agents of invasive Solenopsis fire ants. Pseudacteon species that parasitize the invasive S. invicta Buren and S. richteri Forel have been introduced to, and naturally dispersed across, the southeastern USA, although there is no evidence yet that Solenopsis host ant populations have decreased. The ability of introduced Pseudacteon species to regu...
