Implicit lunar dust mitigation technology: Compliant mechanisms

نویسندگان

چکیده

The finest fraction of the lunar regolith, namely dust, poses a challenge for hardware design and operations. Apollo missions experienced equipment malfunctions failures due to dust interactions with hardware. In this work we focus on problems related clogging rigid body mechanisms. We explain causes problem propose solution consisting replacing traditional mechanisms compliant There are multiple methods synthesizing mechanisms, but two approaches most commonly used: analytical topology optimization. paper using gripper as an example, suitability these used in extra-vehicular activities is investigated. doing so, feasibility complaint part mitigation strategies surface projects also demonstrated.

Finding a Dust Mitigation Strategy for Lunar Surface Operations

Introduction: Design of an effective dust mitigation system to support NASA’s new initiative to return to the surface of the Moon must be a high priority [1,2]. A number of strategies have been proposed based on brushing, magnetic susceptibility or magnetic attraction, variable EMF or other surfaces, and particle guns for charging or repelling dust [2]. Brushing was demonstrated to be effective...

The lunar dust environment

Each year the Moon is bombarded by about 10 kg of interplanetary micrometeoroids of cometary and asteroidal origin. Most of these projectiles range from 10 nm to about 1 mm in size and impact the Moon at 10–72 km/s speed. They excavate lunar soil about 1000 times their own mass. These impacts leave a crater record on the surface from which the micrometeoroid size distribution has been deciphere...

Dry separation of respirable lunar dust: Providing samples for the lunar airborne dust toxicity advisory group

In order to study the toxicity of lunar dust, the respirable size fraction of lunar soil needed to be separated with an apparatus that possesses the following capabilities: no use of liquid; fully recoverable sample; and use of only small sample quantities (o1 gm). We report the design of a simple apparatus that meets these requirements and implements an inertial-impaction mechanism established...

Ocular toxicity of authentic lunar dust

BACKGROUND Dust exposure is a well-known occupational hazard for terrestrial workers and astronauts alike and will continue to be a concern as humankind pursues exploration and habitation of objects beyond Earth. Humankind's limited exploration experience with the Apollo Program indicates that exposure to dust will be unavoidable. Therefore, NASA must assess potential toxicity and recommend app...

Scattering Properties of Lunar Dust Analogs

A number of space missions are planned to explore the lunar exosphere which may contain a small population of dust particles. The objective of this paper is to present preliminary results from scattering experiments on a suspension of lunar simulants to support one such mission. The intensity of the light scattered from a lunar simulant is measured with a commercial version of the spectrometer ...
