Implications of a Temperature-dependent Initial Mass Function. III. Mass Growth and Quiescence

نویسندگان

چکیده

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is predicted to depend upon the temperature of gas in star-forming molecular clouds. introduction an additional parameter, $T_{IMF}$ , into photometric template fitting, suggest most galaxies obey IMF top-heavier than Galactic IMF. implications these revised fits on functions, quiescence and turnoff are discussed. At all redshifts highest become quiescent first with decreasing towards present. synchronous across suggests driven by universal mechanisms rather stochastic or environmental processes.

On the Initial Mass Function of Population Iii Stars

The collapse and fragmentation of filamentary primordial gas clouds are explored using onedimensional and two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations coupled with the nonequilibrium processes of hydrogen molecule formation. The cloud evolution is computed from the initial central density nc = 10− 10 cm. The simulations show that depending upon the initial density, there are two occasions for the...

Cosmological Implications of a Stellar Initial Mass Function that Varies with the Jeans Mass in Galaxies

Observations of star-forming galaxies at high z have suggested discrepancies in the inferred star formation rates (SFRs) either between data and models or between complementary measures of the SFR. These putative discrepancies could all be alleviated if the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is systematically weighted towards more high-mass star formation in rapidly star-forming galaxies. Here...

Mapping the core mass function to the initial mass function

It has been shown that fragmentation within self-gravitating, turbulent molecular clouds (‘turbulent fragmentation’) can naturally explain the observed properties of protostellar cores, including the core mass function (CMF). Here, we extend recently developed analytic models for turbulent fragmentation to follow the time-dependent hierarchical fragmentation of selfgravitating cores, until they...

The Stellar Initial Mass Function

The current status of both the observational evidence and the theory of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is reviewed, with particular attention to the two basic, apparently universal features shown by all observations of nearby stellar systems: (1) a characteristic stellar mass of the order of one solar mass, and (2) a power-law decline of the IMF at large masses similar to the original ...

The Initial Mass Function and its Variation

The observed distribution of IMF shapes can be understood as statistical sampling from a universal IMF and variations that result from stellar-dynamical processes. However, young star clusters appear to have an IMF biased towards low-mass stars when compared to the Galactic disk IMF, which comprises an average populated by star-formation episodes occurring Gyrs ago. In addition to this tentativ...
