Implementation of photographic triage in a paediatric dental, orthodontic, and maxillofacial department during COVID‐19

Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, limitations were placed on face-to-face encounters in dentistry and oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) order to promote physical distancing reduce viral propagation. To facilitate continued assessment of dental, orthodontic, emergencies, a photographic triage system was initiated at Alder Hey Children's Hospital (AHCH). We will discuss benefits this offers patient, clinician, departmental, NHS service level. Aim share our experience during first 3 months lockdown, lessons learned, recommendations. Design Prospective data collection over months. Results 220 referrals received, swelling (30%) dental trauma (27%) most common presenting complaints. 57% not seen, 23% seen semi-urgently, 20% booked for outpatient review. Of those 7 children elsewhere 44 AHCH, with 8 being admitted. Conclusion Photographic reduced proved useful training junior staff, new patient referrals, on-call from home. Implementation should be considered throughout OMFS departments nationwide. In event resurgence or emergence could provision.
