Impacts of Best Management Practices on Runoff, Soil Loss, and Sediment Yield in the Megech Watershed, Ethiopia

چکیده
This study evaluated the best management practices on how to manage soil losses from catchment and reduce sediment load into a dam reservoir. aimed evaluate relationship of runoff, loss, yield with practice (BMP) scenarios in GeoWEPP environment for selected three micro-watersheds (hot spot areas) Megech watershed, upper Blue Nile Basin. The impacts four agricultural BMP scenarios, including forest five years old, corn, soybean; wheat, alfalfa (4 yr) no till; soybean, conservation winter wheat mulch till, were quantified. results revealed that loss ranges between 41.45–66.11 t/ha/year rates 36.5–54.8 baseline situation (conventional tillage condition) found be higher than tolerable (10 t/ha/year) region. Implementing BMPs crop land has positive all variables’ reductions. Among implemented BMPs, forests five-year perennial (agroforestry) option showed highest rate reduction yield, but cost benefit analysis was included this choose among BMPs. also identified play great role reducing watershed minimize on- off-site impacts. In general, it is important consider will change throughout project’s implementation at level future.

The effects of watershed management practices on runoff production using SCS model in Anbaranchay watershed
Watershed management has different effects on the amount of runoff and sediment and alteration ofhydrological features in a watershed. In this study, the effects of watershed management on runoff was investigated in the Anbaranchaywatershed. For this purpose, the topography data in format of a digital elevation model, land use, soil hydrological groups and watershed managemetrigeon, and also usi...
متن کاملModeling the Impacts of Spatial Heterogeneity in the Castor Watershed on Runoff, Sediment, and Phosphorus Loss Using SWAT: I. Impacts of Spatial Variability of Soil Properties
Spatial accuracy of hydrologic modeling inputs influences the output from hydrologic models. A pertinent question is to know the optimal level of soil sampling or how many soil samples are needed for model input, in order to improve model predictions. In this study, measured soil properties were clustered into five different configurations as inputs to the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) ...
متن کاملAnimal Waste Bmp Impacts on Sediment and Nutrient Losses in Runoff from the Owl Run Watershed
The results of the 10-year study conducted in the Owl Run watershed clearly indicate the beneficial impacts of the best management practices (BMPs) on the surface water quality. The main objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of a system of animal waste BMPs for improving surface water quality. Precipitation, streamflow, total suspended solids, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P...

A paired watershed study consisting of agroforestry (trees plus grass buffer strips), contour strips (grass buffer strips), and control treatments with a corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) During the (1991-1997) calibration and subsequent three-year treatment periods, runoff was measured in...
متن کاملRunoff and sediment yield modeling using WEPP in a semi-arid environment (Case study: Orazan Watershed)
Water erosion is a major environmental problem in many parts of the world. Majority of semi-arid countries are concerned because of their specific climate and soils sensitivity, but also because of the recent intensification of human activities and agricultural practices. Accurate estimation of water erosion for various land-use and climate scenarios is so an important key to define sustainable...
