Impact of Soil Moisture Initialization in the Simulation of Indian Summer Monsoon Using RegCM4

چکیده

Soil moisture is one of the key components land surface processes and a potential source atmospheric predictability that has received little attention in regional scale studies. In this study, an attempt was made to investigate impact soil on Indian summer monsoon simulation using model. We conducted seasonal simulations climate model (RegCM4) for two different years, viz., 2002 (deficit) 2011 (normal). The forced initialize with high-resolution satellite-derived data obtained from Climate Change Initiative (CCI) European Space Agency (ESA) by replacing default static moisture. Simulated results were validated against temperature rainfall analysis datasets India Meteorology Department (IMD). Careful examination revealed significant advancement RegCM4 when initialized ESA-CCI despite having biases. general, exhibited slightly higher than observation, ESA setup showed lower one. Model ability relatively better capturing distribution data. Rainfall biases over homogeneous regions significantly improved use Several statistical measures such as temporal correlation, standard deviation, equitable threat score (ETS), etc. also employed assessment. ETS values found be setup. However, still unable enhance its simulating variation adequately. Although initializing satellite performed normal year (2011) but had limitations epochs extreme (2002). Thus, study concluded although predicting variability. suggests initialization critical accurate prediction circulation convective activity.

Impact of variability in the Indian summer monsoon on the East Asian summer monsoon

We report on model experiments that support the hypothesis that the second mode of variability of the East Asian Summer Monsoon is influenced by the variability of the Indian Summer Monsoon. The results suggest that the recent trend towards drier conditions in northern China in summer is, at least partly, a consequence of the synchronous drying trend over India in summer noted by some authors. ...

Improved prediction of severe thunderstorms over the Indian Monsoon region using high-resolution soil moisture and temperature initialization

The hypothesis that realistic land conditions such as soil moisture/soil temperature (SM/ST) can significantly improve the modeling of mesoscale deep convection is tested over the Indian monsoon region (IMR). A high resolution (3 km foot print) SM/ST dataset prepared from a land data assimilation system, as part of a national monsoon mission project, showed close agreement with observations. Ex...

Impact of Land Surface Initialization and Land-Atmosphere Coupling on the Prediction of the Indian Summer Monsoon with the CFSv2

The impact of initial land-surface states on monthly to seasonal prediction skill of the Indian summer monsoon (June–September) is investigated using a suite of hindcasts made with the Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) operational forecast model. The modern paradigm of land-atmosphere coupling is applied to quantify biases in different components of the land-atmosphere coupled system an...
