Impact of oceanic gateway and CO2 changes on the East Asian summer monsoon during the mid-pliocene in a coupled general circulation model

The Pliocene epoch from about 5.3 million to 2.6 years before present is the most recent period of sustained global warmth similar near future projections. restriction Indonesian Passages, closure Panama Seaway and declining atmospheric CO 2 -concentration are suggested have caused climate evolution present-day condition. Here, we sea surface temperature (SST) reconstructions along with sensitivity experimental results a coupled General Circulation Model. We find that, in terms SST, simulated model good agreement regions except North Atlantic Arctic. This suggests necessity for improved boundary conditions possible underestimation internal feedback at high-latitudes. responses East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) oceanic gateway investigated. Influences on EASM more prominent. An intensification intensity by ∼50% response , which largely attributed strengthened land-ocean thermal contrast, while precipitation decreases ∼4.8%. In two seaway changes only drives relatively weak respect wind speed precipitation. A water vapor budget analysis that reduced moisture content due decreasing significantly contributes response.
