Impact of indemnity private health insurance on emergency department visits and expenditures

Indemnity private health insurance (PHI) is a type of that pays actual medical expenses. We investigated the effect subscriptions to indemnity PHI on emergency department (ED) expenses and number ED visits. This study was retrospective using Korea Health Panel Data from 2013 2017. The exposure variable subscription PHI. control group did not subscribe throughout period, while insured had subscribed in 2014, but done so 2016 outcomes were (per visit) compared between before after groups. A total 1919 subjects (265 1654 group) included. Univariable analyses indicated no difference use according time period. However, multivariable modeling analysis showed significantly higher for (US$5.7 more expense, p = 0.036; US$4.3 expense per visit, 0.035). In addition, education level, chronic disease, disability status, economic activity body mass index associated with use. suggests can increase without an visit frequency. Further studies are necessary validate these results another dataset.
