Imbrications of gender and religion in Nordic radical right populism

We examine here how issues of gender and religion are employed for ideological purposes in the discourses radical right populist parties Sweden Finland. begin with complexity these societies as paragons social welfare equality, within which Lutheran Christianity discreetly underpins their largely secularised character. Employing a poststructuralist methodological approach, we analyse key political speeches chairpersons Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna) Finns Party (Perussuomalaiset/ Sannfinländarna). unveil complex interplay between religion; equality is used strategically to strengthen legitimise separation ‘the people’ racialised Others, while references rank Other ‘less than’ secular modern ‘people’, oppose alleged inquisitorial attempts on part progressive left liberal parties.
