Imagery Rescripting Versus Extinction: Distinct and Combined Effects on Expectancy and Revaluation Learning

Anxiety disorders are effectively treated with exposure therapy, but relapse remains high. Fear may reinstate after reoccurrence of the negative event because expectancy aversive outcome (unconditioned stimulus [US]) is adjusted not its evaluation. Imagery rescripting (ImRs) an intervention that proposed to work through revaluation US. The aim our preregistered study was test effects ImRs and extinction on US revaluation. Day 1 ( n = 106) consisted acquisition film clip as manipulation (ImRs + extinction, extinction-only, or ImRs-only) took place 2. Reinstatement fear tested 3. Results showed learning in both conditions ImRs-only condition no enhanced ImRs. combination slowed down did protect against reinstatement, which pleads favor stand-alone interventions clinical practice.
