Two Antarctic penguin genomes reveal insights into their evolutionary history and molecular changes related to the Antarctic environment
BACKGROUND Penguins are flightless aquatic birds widely distributed in the Southern Hemisphere. The distinctive morphological and physiological features of penguins allow them to live an aquatic life, and some of them have successfully adapted to the hostile environments in Antarctica. To study the phylogenetic and population history of penguins and the molecular basis of their adaptations to A...

Under these major changes, two former classes of occupationally ĵ. deferred men, the 18-to-25-year olds, and the 25-to-30-year olds, have been lumped into a single Class. The requirement for deferment has been changed to "indispensable and irreplaceable to warsupporting activity" instead of the former "necessary' to and regularly engaged in." This means that Federal agen' «ies employing deferre...
متن کاملPenguin eggshell membranes reflect homogeneity of mercury in the marine food web surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula.
Remote regions such as the Antarctic have become increasingly important for investigations into far-reaching anthropogenic impacts on the environment, most recently in regard to the global mercury cycle. Spatial patterns of mercury availability in four regions of the Antarctic Peninsula were investigated using three species of sympatrically breeding Pygoscelis penguins as biomonitors. Eggshells...
متن کاملPast penguin colony responses to explosive volcanism on the Antarctic Peninsula
Changes in penguin populations on the Antarctic Peninsula have been linked to several environmental factors, but the potentially devastating impact of volcanic activity has not been considered. Here we use detailed biogeochemical analyses to track past penguin colony change over the last 8,500 years on Ardley Island, home to one of the Antarctic Peninsula's largest breeding populations of gento...
