Foraging gene expression patterns in queens, workers, and males in a eusocial insect

چکیده
Reproductive division of labour is based on biased expression complementary parental behaviours, brood production (egg-laying) by queens and care (in particular, brood-provisioning) workers. In many social insect species, provision when establishing colonies at the beginning a breeding season reproductive begins with emergence foraging (for) mRNA associated intensity behaviour therefore brood-provisioning. However, only two studies have compared queen worker for levels neither accounted transcript splice variation. this study, we compare level for-α variant across four life stages caste, behavioural groups workers, males eusocial sweat bee Lasioglossum laevissimum (Smith, 1853). Foundresses collected prior to onset had highest levels. All active (post-hibernatory) workers similar independent behaviour. These results suggest that gene in L. acts as primer before activity caste-specific patterns correlate timing

Queens versus workers: sex-ratio conflict in eusocial Hymenoptera
Studies of sex-ratio conflict in the eusocial Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps) have provided the most rigorous tests of kin selection theory. The hymenopteran haplodiploid system of sex determination generally renders workers more closely related to their sisters than to their brothers, whereas queens are equally related to their sons and daughters. Kin selection theory therefore predicts tha...
متن کاملDifferential Flight Muscle Development in Workers, Queens and Males of the Eusocial Bees, Apis mellifera and Scaptotrigona postica
The flight capability of the adult eusocial bees, Apis mellifera L. and Scaptotrigona postica Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae), is intrinsically linked to their colonial functions, such as the nuptial flight for mating in the case of queens and males, and the exploration of new habitats for nesting and food sources in the case of workers. Flight is achieved by the contraction of indirect flight ...
متن کاملReproductive workers show queenlike gene expression in an intermediately eusocial insect, the buff-tailed bumble bee Bombus terrestris.
Bumble bees represent a taxon with an intermediate level of eusociality within Hymenoptera. The clear division of reproduction between a single founding queen and the largely sterile workers is characteristic for highly eusocial species, whereas the morphological similarity between the bumble bee queen and the workers is typical for more primitively eusocial hymenopterans. Also, unlike other hi...

Energetic inequivalence in eusocial insect colonies.
The energetic equivalence rule states that population-level metabolic rate is independent of average body size. This rule has been both supported and refuted by allometric studies of abundance and individual metabolic rate, but no study, to my knowledge, has tested the rule with direct measurements of whole-population metabolic rate. Here, I find a positive scaling of whole-colony metabolic rat...
