Identifying damage mechanisms of gymnasium structure damaged by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake based on biaxial excitation

چکیده

During the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, gymnasium buildings sustained unexpected structural damage, preventing their use as evacuation shelters. This study examines one such severely damaged structure with fewer connections between steel roof and reinforced concrete columns. Results of eigenvalue, pushover, seismic response analyses elucidate observed damage. The out-of-plane deformation is prominent because slight constraint at column top, leading to severe damage base. Moreover, a parametric peak ground acceleration suggests that biaxial excitation produces different failure modes top from those under uniaxial excitation. variation mechanisms evidenced by variety motions broad range frequency characteristics. Pushover analysis results demonstrated predictability initial connection failure. However, discrepancies pushover became greater subsequent failures. base can be assessed accurately based on analyses.

At 14:46 on March 11, 2011, the magnitude-9.0 earthquake attacked Sendai and neighboring cities distributed along the northeast coast of Honshu Island, Japan. Its epicenter is located 130 km east of Sendai (Fig. 1). Unfortunate ly, the strong earthquake generated devastating tsunamis that destroyed many towns and villages near the seashore in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures. The natura...

Prompt gravity signal induced by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake

Transient gravity changes are expected to occur at all distances during an earthquake rupture, even before the arrival of seismic waves. Here we report on the search of such a prompt gravity signal in data recorded by a superconducting gravimeter and broadband seismometers during the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. During the earthquake rupture, a signal exceeding the background noise is obs...

Displacement above the hypocenter of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake.

The moment magnitude (M(w)) = 9.0 2011 Tohoku-Oki mega-thrust earthquake occurred off the coast of northeastern Japan. Combining Global Positioning System (GPS) and acoustic data, we detected very large sea-floor movements associated with this event directly above the focal region. An area with more than 20 meters of horizontal displacement, that is, four times larger than those detected on lan...

Damage Detection of the 2011 Tohoku, Japan Earthquake from High-resolution SAR Intensity Images

The Tohoku earthquake of March 11, 2011, caused gigantic tsunamis and widespread devastation. Various high-resolution satellites quickly captured the details of affected areas, and were used for emergency response. In this study, high-resolution preand post-event TerraSAR-X intensity images were used to identify damaged buildings. Since the damaged buildings show changes in backscatter intensit...
