Identifying Characteristics of Guam’s Extreme Rainfalls Prior to Climate Change Assessment

نویسندگان

چکیده

Extreme rainfall and its consequential flooding account for a devastating amount of damage to the Pacific Islands. Having an improved understanding extreme patterns can better inform stormwater managers about current future scenarios, so they minimize potential damages disruptions. In this study, scaling invariant properties annual maximum precipitations (AMPs) are used describing regional rainfalls over Guam. AMPs calculated at seven stations in Guam exhibit distinct simple behavior two different time frames: (1) from 15 min 45 min; (2) 24 h. With these behaviors, conventional estimation methods sub-hourly durations overestimate frequencies site which breakpoints clearly observed, while proposed Scaling Generalized Value (GEV) method, based on Three-NCM (S3NCM) provides comparable estimates. A new analysis approach exponents is introduced study. Results show Moreover, numerical graphical analyses identify that tropical cyclone may increase daily by 3%, average.

New Hybrid Method to Model Extreme Rainfalls

Modeling and forecasting dynamics of rainfall occurrences constitute one of the major topics, which have been largely treated by statisticians, hydrologists, climatologists and many other groups of scientists. In the same issue, we propose, in the present paper, a new hybrid method, which combines Extreme Values and fractal theories. We illustrate the use of our methodology for transformed Embe...

Some Basic Economics of Extreme Climate Change

Climate change is characterized by deep structural uncertainty in the science coupled with an economic inability to evaluate meaningfully the welfare losses from high temperature changes. The probability of a disastrous collapse of planetary welfare from too much CO2 is non-negligible, even if this low probability is not objectively knowable. This paper attempts to explain (in not excessively t...

Extreme Events as Pacemaker of Adaptation to Climate Change

For variety of reasons, extreme events are thought of as propelling adaptation to climate change (Füssel, 2007; IPCC, 2012). In the simplest formulation of this logical assertion, extreme weather and climate events transcend the signal-to-noise threshold and make climate risks starkly evident to decision-makers. Similarly, they make latent societal vulnerability manifest, and overcome economic ...

Climate change and extreme heat events.

The association between climate change and the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events is now well established. General circulation models of climate change predict that heatwaves will become more frequent and intense, especially in the higher latitudes, affecting large metropolitan areas that are not well adapted to them. Exposure to extreme heat is already a significant public health p...

Uncertainty , Extreme Outcomes , and Climate Change

Focusing on tail effects — low probability but very adverse outcomes — I incorporate distributions for temperature change and its economic impact in an analysis of climate change policy. I estimate the fraction of consumption w(τ ) that society would be willing to sacrifice to ensure that any increase in temperature at a future point is limited to τ . Using information on the distributions for ...
