Icy molecule desorption in interstellar grain collisions

چکیده

ABSTRACT Observations of gaseous complex organic molecules (COMs) in cold starless and prestellar cloud cores require efficient desorption the COMs their parent species from icy mantles on interstellar grains. With a simple astrochemical model, we investigate if mechanical removal ice fragments oblique collisions between grains two size bins (0.01 0.1 µm) can substantially affect COM abundances. Two grain collision velocities were considered – 10 50 m s−1, corresponding to realistic relative speeds arising ambipolar diffusion turbulence, respectively. From smaller grains, are assumed remove spherical cap with height equal 1/3 1 mantle thickness, We find that turbulence-induced elevate gas-phase abundances by several orders magnitude, reproducing observed within an order magnitude. Importantly, high attained for long time-scales up Myr rather low methanol abundance, common cores. The considering only assumptions, demonstrates concept must be tested more sophisticated approach.

Desorption From Interstellar Ices

The desorption of molecular species from ice mantles back into the gas phase in molecular clouds results from a variety of very poorly understood processes. We have investigated three mechanisms; desorption resulting from H2 formation on grains, direct cosmic ray heating and cosmic ray induced photodesorption. Whilst qualitative differences exist between these processes (essentially deriving fr...

Grain Destruction in Interstellar Shock Waves

Interstellar shock waves can erode and destroy grains present in the shocked gas, primarily as the result of sputtering and grain-grain collisions. Uncertainties in current estimates of sputtering yields are reviewed. Results are presented for the simple case of sputtering of fast grains being stopped in cold gas. An upper limit is derived for sputtering of refractory grains in C-type MHD shock...

Communication: vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption of interstellar icy thiols.

Following the recent identification of ethanethiol in the interstellar medium (ISM) we have carried out Vacuum UltraViolet (VUV) spectroscopy studies of ethanethiol (CH3CH2SH) from 10 K until sublimation in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber simulating astrochemical conditions. These results are compared with those of methanethiol (CH3SH), the lower order thiol also reported to be present in the ISM. ...

Convection in Icy Satellites with Self-consistent Grain Size

Introduction: Ice grain size controls the geodynamic evolution of the ice I shells of large to mid-sized icy satellites. Grain size controls the viscosity of ice [1,2], and thus, the heat flux from the outer ice I shell by controlling the likelihood and efficiency of convection. In addition, the rheology of ice controls the depth to the brittle/ductile transition, which is a key control on endo...
