Commercialization and commodification of higher education has been subjected to wide critique in academic literature. The relative privilege professions seems be on the decline, as universities are increasing competitive pressures – which these institutions pass academics. Academics experience a loss control over their own working conditions, with high intrinsic motivation goals being imprinted by extrinsic ones. Looking at recent developments through lens alienation theory, it is possible argue that academics feel deep sense disempowerment, counterproductive not only for work, but also traditional identities.
