Hume's Rhetorical Strategy: Three Views

چکیده
In the Fragment on Evil, Hume announces that he ‘shall not employ any rhetoric in a philosophical argument, where reason alone ought to be hearkened to’. To rhetorical strategy, context of Fragment, just is ‘enumerate all evils, incident human life, and display them, with eloquence, their proper colours’. However, Part 11 Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, employs precisely this strategy. I discuss three interpretations might account for Hume's decision strategy but Fragment. We describe here GenomeAtlases as a method for visualising three different aspects of complete microbial chromosomes: repeats, DNA structural characteristics, and base composition. We have applied this method to all publicly available genomes, and find a general strand preference of global repeats. The atlas for the Mycoplasma genitalium genome is presented as an example, and results from all t...
متن کاملThree Views of Common Knowledge
This paper investigates the relationships between three different views of common knowledge: the iterate approach, the fixed point approach, and the shared environment approach. We show that no two of these approaches are equivalent, contrary to accepted wisdom. We argue that the fixed point is the best conceptual analysis of the pretheoretic notion, but that the shared environment approach has...
