Human‐Driven Fire Regime Change in the Seasonal Tropical Forests of Central Vietnam

To better understand fire regimes and their relation to climate in the seasonal tropical forests of continental Southeast Asia, we developed first multi-century tree-ring based history chronology for region. The included 776 scars collected at Bidoup NuiBa National Park (BNNP) Central Highlands Vietnam spans period 1636–2020. Fires were recorded 116 years, representing 47% years covered by 249-year between scar (1772) last (2020). While only 9% within sampled BNNP experienced fires before 1905, 70% 1906 1963 90% showed evidence after 1963. Fire occurrence was highly correlated with indices (wet season Nino 3.4 dry regional Palmer Drought Severity Index) during 1906–1963, but no significant correlation Our reconstruction from suggests that regime has shifted one driven primarily which human activities dominate these landscapes.
