Human-induced earthquakes: E-PIE—a generic tool for Evaluating Proposals of Induced Earthquakes

چکیده

Abstract The HiQuake database documents all cases of earthquake sequences proposed on scientific grounds to have been induced by anthropogenic industrial activity. Because these range from being highly plausible unpersuasive, stakeholders requested be allocated plausibility grades. Since no questionnaire scheme existed that was sufficiently generalized applied the diverse in , we developed a new for task. Our Evaluating Proposals Induced Earthquakes (E-PIE) comprises nine questions with simple weighting system adjust variable diagnostic strength different observations. Results are illustrated using colored pie chart. We describe E-PIE and illustrate its application detail example Groningen gas field Netherlands, November 2017 M5.4 Pohang Enhanced Geothermal Systems-related sequence South Korea, 2001 deep-penetrating bombing Tora Bora, Afghanistan. To test performance E-PIE, five analysts independently it suite 23 . By far most those concerning spatial temporal correlations effects. Other data diagnostically subsidiary. For individual cases, agreement between correlated positively evidence human induction. results agree well specialist tailored fluid-injection cases. Its strong confirms suitability apply entire database.

Magnitude Scaling of Induced Earthquakes

Presented are the results of an earthquake magnitude homogenization exercise for several datasets of induced earthquakes. The result of this exercise is to show that homogeneous computation of earthquake momentand local-magnitude is useful in hazard assessment of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs). Data include records from EGSs in Basel (Switzerland), Soultz (France) and Cooper Basin (Australi...

Automatic Classification of Volcanic Earthquakes in HMM-Induced Vector Spaces

Even though hidden Markov models (HMMs) have been used for the automatic classification of volcanic earthquakes, their usage has been so far limited to the Bayesian scheme. Recently proposed alternatives, proven in other application scenarios, consist in building HMMinduced vector spaces where discriminative classification techniques can be applied. In this paper, a simple vector space is induc...

Nucleation speed limit on remote fluid-induced earthquakes

Earthquakes triggered by other remote seismic events are explained as a response to long-traveling seismic waves that temporarily stress the crust. However, delays of hours or days after seismic waves pass through are reported by several studies, which are difficult to reconcile with the transient stresses imparted by seismic waves. We show that these delays are proportional to magnitude and th...

The Edges of Large Earthquakes and the Epicenters of Future Earthquakes: Stress-induced Correlations in Elastodynamic Fault Models

Fault models can generate complex sequences of events from frictional instabilities, even when the material properties are completely uniform along the fault. These complex sequences arise from the heterogeneous stress and strain fields which are produced through the dynamics of repeated ruptures on the fault. Visual inspection of the patterns of events produced in these models shows a striking...

Acoustic fluidization for earthquakes?

Melosh [1996] has suggested that acoustic fluidization could provide an alternative to theories that are invoked as explanations for why some faults appear to be weak. We show that there is a subtle but profound inconsistency in the theory that unfortunately invalidates the results. We propose possible remedies but must acknowledge that the relevance of acoustic fluidization remains an open que...
