How the Everyday Logic of Pragmatic Individualism Undermines Russian State Pronatalism

The article examines the reproductive decisions of Russian urban middle?class women. We look at women’s lives in context pronatalist family policy and official conservative gender ideology 2019–2020. Based on biographical interviews with 35 young women, we focus working mothers. sample is composed mothers since their lifestyle serves as a cultural model for whole society. reconstruct everyday rationalities deployed by to justify decisions. respondents seek “self?realization,” postponing childbirth or limiting reproduction. discourse “pragmatic individualism” an logic used mothers, which helps them cope instability labor market marriage lack state social support. Using individualism,” women present themselves respectable, socially competent individuals able build according living standards. pragmatic individualism contradicts message based “traditional” roles high fertility.
