How rare are diffusive rare events?
We study the time until first occurrence, the first-passage time, of rare density fluctuations in diffusive systems. We approach the problem using a model consisting of many independent random walkers on a lattice. The existence of spatial correlations makes this problem analytically intractable. However, for a mean-field approximation in which the walkers can jump anywhere in the system, we ob...
متن کاملKeeping rare events rare
It has been claimed that corpus-based TTS is unworkable because it is not practical to include representative units to cover all or most of the combinations of segments and prosodic characteristics found in general texts, a problem characterized as Large Numbers of Rare Events (LNRE). We argue that part of this problem is in its formulation, and that a closer look, including investigations into...
متن کاملStatistical Monitoring of Rare Events in Healthcare
There are miscellaneous quality characteristics in healthcare which are interested to be monitored. However, monitoring each characteristic needs a special statistical method. There are some characteristics with very small incidence rates that it’s usually considered not to be necessary to monitoring them, since their incidence rates are so small that p and np charts are not able to monitor t...
متن کاملHow Rare is Rare?
Large Deviations is a branch of probability theory that deals with rare events. It is a very active field with applications to several areas including statistics, communication networks, computing, statistical physics, and mathematical finance. (For an example of a rare event, consider the problem of species sampling: suppose that one wishes to determine the species of fish native to a body of ...
متن کاملHow Rare Are Subgroups of Index 2?
Using elementary combinatorics and linear algebra, we compute the number of subgroups of index 2 in any finite group. This leads to necessary and su cient conditions for groups to have no subgroups of index 2, or to have a unique subgroup of index 2. Illustrative examples and a class of counterexamples to the converse of Lagrange’s Theorem are also provided.
