How primary teachers use games to support their teaching of mathematics

Mathematical games are widely employed by Australian primary school teachers to support mathematics instruction. Despite broad usage, prior research has not focused on the how and why from a teacher perspective. (n = 248) completed questionnaire designed probe their experience with mathematical in classroom, specifically; motivation for frequency of game execution within lesson routines structures, and, perceptions efficacy achieve pedagogical objectives. Almost all self-reported playing classrooms minimum once week. Games were utilised differing capacities, example, as ‘warm-up’ exercise, introduce new concepts, consolidate skills knowledge, fluency practice. Consistent research, viewed highly effective engaging students mathematics. Teachers also being developing four proficiencies highlighted Curriculum: Mathematics (ACARA, 2019); fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning. Interestingly, despite burgeoning use digital games, only two out 248 surveyed mentioned computer or application favourite lesson. A substantial majority nominated that involved minimal no materials, particular, cards and/ dice, pen paper, oral games. Implications these findings discussed future directions recommended.
