How long do bracken (Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn) control treatments maintain effectiveness?

چکیده

Pteridium aquilinum is a problematic, perennial, invasive species worldwide that poses serious problems in the British uplands. However, there lack of knowledge on long-term success terms weed control and land improvement. We assessed effects six P. aquilinum-control treatments at two acid-grassland sites Scottish Borders (Sourhope 1 & 2). There were treatments: (i) untreated, (ii) cutting once-yearly, (iii) twice-yearly, (iv) asulam sprayed year 1, (v) once 1/asulam 2, (vi) 1/cut 2. The annual stopped after 9/10 years. measured response three variables over 25/26-years assessing aquilinum-performance, agricultural-improvement richness. estimated treatment “effect window”, defined as period which had significant effect relative to untreated experimental-controls. Results completely different for all experiments. At Sourhope much longer windows” than herbicide-based reducing performance, especially cut twice-yearly with 25-year window. differences reduced best (cut twice yearly) producing 13-year both experiments, asulam-based produce minimum window” 10 Increases index richness also obtained sites. “Effect (TVI) showed some improvement; 12–20 9–20 years TVI, 7–17 2–10 2 respectively. Species declined though time Cutting, preferably per year, was most effective but costliest, cost-effective approach being single spray. length suggest repeat-spraying every 10-years needed. Unfortunately, where aim recover biodiversity interventionist techniques such seeding will be use estimating impact perennial novel may other situations.

Isolation of an active glucoside in bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum.

An active glucoside that enhanced release of histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells was isolated from a toxic fraction of bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum, by partition column chromatography on Sephadex G-25. It was a yellowish amorphous powder on freeze-drying, readily soluble in water or ethanol, and insoluble in ether. It was hydrolysed with beta-glucosidase to release D-glucose. It was a...

Effectiveness of Current Methods for the Control of Bracken (pteridium Aquilinum)

Background Control of bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) is a global problem for livestock-based extensive agriculture, conservation, recreation, game management and forestry. Bracken is controlled primarily by application of asulam or by cutting. The success of bracken control may be dependent upon ecological variables (such as habitat type and latitude) and methodological variables (such as number...

Tumor induction in germ-free rats fed bracken (Pteridium aquilinum).

This study indicated that there was no significant difference in the incidence of intestinal tumors between germ-free and conventional rats fed a diet containing bracken, suggesting that gut microflora did not play a definite role in bracken tumorigenesis. However, bracken induced exclusively sarcoma but no adenocarcinoma in germ-free rats, whereas it induced predominantly adenocarcinoma in con...

Bracken (Pteridium aquilinum); the effect of steaming on the nutritive value of bracken hay.

The bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) has been known for a long time to be poisonous to cattle (Penberthy, 1893) and horses (Muller, 1897) under farm conditions. Field cases of bracken poisoning in sheep are almost unknown; the more selective feeding habits of sheep may be responsible for their apparent immunity. Bracken poisoning has been experimentally produced in cattle (Almond, I 894), hor...

Drift control and buffer zones for helicopter spraying of bracken (Pteridium aquilinum)

Application of asulam herbicide by helicopter, as a primary treatment of bracken, requires appropriate buffer zones to protect non-target plants, conservation areas and water catchments from spray drift. Drift from large-scale applications of asulam were monitored at two moorland sites where helicopters were fitted with Delavan RD ‘Raindrop’ drift-reducing, hollow-cone nozzles. Drift was measur...
