How landscape and biotic interactions shape a Mediterranean reptile community

چکیده

Abstract Context Disentangling the effect of environment and biological interaction on community composition with observational data, within environmental filtering framework, is challenging because two processes produce non independent results. Objectives Adopting N-mixture models symmetric interactions, we aimed at estimating differential effects landscape structure biotic interactions local abundance a Mediterranean reptile including four lizards ( Lacerta bilineata; Podarcis siculus; P. muralis; Chalcides chalcides ) snakes Hierophis viridiflavus; Natrix Helvetica ). Methods We sampled reptiles for three consecutive years (2019–2021; 4 surveys/year) 52 linear transects coastal landscape. analyzed count data by means multi-species model interactions. Interactions pair species were estimated from residual correlation their realized abundances, after accounting features: heterogeneity calculated land cover edge density woody vegetation patches, tree density, net primary productivity. Results Most displayed very low detection probability p ~ 0.10). All responded different intensity sensitivity to predictors. Two resulted significant: L. bilineata siculus showed positive interaction, while muralis C. negative interaction. Conclusions Using demonstrated that, also obtained community, partitioning process one possible.

How latitude affects biotic interactions.

A re biotic interactions, such as competition and predation, stronger in the tropics than at higher latitudes? Biologists have long speculated that more intense interactions tend to occur at lower rather than at higher latitudes as a result of year-round warm and wet conditions near the equator, particularly in lowland tropical rainforests (1). This idea is now well established in the ecologica...

Biotic Interactions Shape the Ecological Distributions of Staphylococcus Species

Many metagenomic sequencing studies have observed the presence of closely related bacterial species or genotypes in the same microbiome. Previous attempts to explain these patterns of microdiversity have focused on the abiotic environment, but few have considered how biotic interactions could drive patterns of microbiome diversity. We dissected the patterns, processes, and mechanisms shaping th...

How Host-microbial Interactions Shape

■ Abstract Humans and other mammals are colonized by a vast, complex, and dynamic consortium of microorganisms. One evolutionary driving force for maintaining this metabolically active microbial society is to salvage energy from nutrients, particularly carbohydrates, that are otherwise nondigestible by the host. Much of our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which members of the intes...

How will biotic interactions influence climate change-induced range shifts?

Biotic interactions present a challenge in determining whether species distributions will track climate change. Interactions with competitors, consumers, mutualists, and facilitators can strongly influence local species distributions, but few studies assess how and whether these interactions will impede or accelerate climate change-induced range shifts. In this paper, we explore how ecologists ...

How Ecology and Landscape Dynamics Shape Phylogenetic Trees.

Whether biotic or abiotic factors are the dominant drivers of clade diversification is a long-standing question in evolutionary biology. The ubiquitous patterns of phylogenetic imbalance and branching slowdown have been taken as supporting the role of ecological niche filling and spatial heterogeneity in ecological features, and thus of biotic processes, in diversification. However, a proper th...
