چکیده
Abstract. Effective and efficient communication of expected avalanche conditions danger to the public is great importance, especially where primary audience forecasts are recreational, non-expert users. In Europe, communicated using a pyramid, starting with ordinal levels progressing through avalanche-prone locations problems description. many forecast products, information relating trigger required release an avalanche, frequency or number potential triggering spots, size described exclusively in textual These descriptions are, however, least standardized part forecasts. Taking perspective forecaster focusing particularly on terms describing these three characterizing elements danger, we investigate first which meaning forecasters assign text second how relate level. We analyzed almost 6000 published Switzerland written structured catalogue phrases limited words. Words representing were labeled assigned classes by Swiss forecasters. then related danger. Forecasters relatively consistent assigning labels words Cohen's kappa values ranging from 0.64 0.87. Avalanche also consistently phrases, for example increasing monotonically However, level 2 (moderate), about key instance was often missing descriptions. general, analysis showed that extreme more detail than intermediate values, highlighting difficulty communicating neither rare nor frequent small large. Our results provide data-driven insights could be used refine ways communicated. Furthermore, semiotic triangle, referent (the situation) thought processing process) symbols description), alternative point future studies consistency communication.

Fatal Avalanche Accidents and Forecasted Danger Levels: Patterns in the United States, Canada, Switzerland and France
Throughout the winter, avalanche forecasters issue bulletins to help the public and the managers of public facilities make avalanche safety decisions. These bulletins typically describe important snowpack features and current weather events before rating the avalanche danger on a scale of one through five. Although the character of avalanche conditions may vary between regions, the physical pro...

For a parallel architecture to scale eeectively, communication latency between processors must be avoided. We have found that the source of a large number of avoidable cache misses is the use of hardwired write-invalidate coherency protocols, which often exhibit high cache miss rates due to excessive invalidations and subsequent reloading of shared data. In the Avalanche project at the Universi...
متن کاملComparison of avalanche survival patterns in Canada and Switzerland.
BACKGROUND Current recommendations for rescue and resuscitation of people buried in avalanches are based on Swiss avalanche survival data. We analyzed Canadian survival patterns and compared them with those from Switzerland. METHODS We extracted relevant data for survivors and nonsurvivors of complete avalanche burials from Oct. 1, 1980, to Sept. 30, 2005, from Canadian and Swiss databases. W...
متن کاملCan Field Observations Be Combined Systematically with the Regional Danger Rating to Estimate the Local Avalanche Danger?
Snow avalanche danger can vary considerably within the large forecast regions in western Canada. Experienced recreationists routinely use the regional bulletin along with local observations to estimate the local avalanche danger. However, some less experienced recreationists are unsure how to interpret the various field observations. To assess a systematic approach, we conducted a field study d...
متن کاملAvalanche polynomials
The avalanche polynomial on a graph, introduced in [5], capture the distribution of avalanches in the abelian sandpile model. Studied on trees, this polynomial could be defined by simply considering the size of the subtrees of the original tree. In this article, we study some properties of this polynomial on plane trees. In [5], they show that two different trees could have the same avalanche p...
