How Do Regional Distributions of Daily Precipitation Change under Warming?

چکیده

Abstract Global warming is changing the intensity distribution of daily precipitation, with an increased frequency heavy precipitation and reduced light/moderate in general circulation model (GCM) projections. Projected future CMIP5 GCM changes regional can be described by a combination two idealized modes: decrease mode, representing reduction at all rain rates; shift where shifts toward heavier rates. A increase are projected most regions, but magnitude change shows large variations. The modes generally capture from to rates do not recreate very highest lowest We propose simple framework for deep convective based on dry static energy (DSE) budget, which provides physical explanation these regions seasons convection dominates precipitation. One possibility that mode driven inhibition (CIN). In this DSE framework, moisture under could influence shape distribution, particularly rates, does govern overall well Clausius–Clapeyron relationship. Changes free respond only local (in e.g., moisture) also constrained transport associated large-scale circulation.

Regional Tropical Precipitation Change Mechanisms in ECHAM4/OPYC3 under Global Warming*

Mechanisms of global warming impacts on regional tropical precipitation are examined in a coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation model (ECHAM4/OPYC3). The pattern of the regional tropical precipitation changes, once established, tends to persist, growing in magnitude as greenhouse gases increase. The sulfate aerosol induces regional tropical precipitation anomalies similar to the greenhou...

How does ocean ventilation change under global warming?

Since the upper ocean takes up much of the heat added to the earth system by anthropogenic global warming, one would expect that global warming would lead to an increase in stratification and a decrease in the ventilation of the ocean interior. However, multiple simulations in global coupled climate models using an ideal age tracer 5 which is set to zero in the mixed layer and ages at 1 yr/yr o...

Large differences in regional precipitation change between a first and second 2 K of global warming

For adaptation and mitigation planning, stakeholders need reliable information about regional precipitation changes under different emissions scenarios and for different time periods. A significant amount of current planning effort assumes that each K of global warming produces roughly the same regional climate change. Here using 25 climate models, we compare precipitation responses with three ...

Local warming: daily temperature change influences belief in global warming.

Although people are quite aware of global warming, their beliefs about it may be malleable; specifically, their beliefs may be constructed in response to questions about global warming. Beliefs may reflect irrelevant but salient information, such as the current day's temperature. This replacement of a more complex, less easily accessed judgment with a simple, more accessible one is known as att...

Detection-attribution of global warming at the regional scale: How to deal with precipitation variability?

[1] Given the strong natural variability of precipitation, detection of anthropogenic climate change has been mainly based on surface thermal indicators. It is here argued that precipitation variability, whatever its natural or anthropogenic origin, is likely to affect surface temperature and, thereby, to hamper the detection-attribution of climate change at the regional scale. This issue is il...
