How do food safety concerns affect consumer behaviors and diets in low- and middle-income countries? A systematic review

Both food safety and dietary behaviors are major contributors to the global burden of disease, especially in rapidly urbanising environments. The impact that concerns have on low- middle-income countries (LMICs) is insufficiently documented. Therefore, we examined whether influence consumer behaviors/diets LMICs. A systematic review identified 46 relevant studies from 20 LMICs for inclusion. socio-ecological environment framework was used map factors (food acquisition/purchase, eating out home, preparation/storage) diets (consumption nutrient rich/poor foods). Several (n = 11) reported despite concerns, consumers could not always ensure they consumed safe food; barriers were affordability, accessibility appeal. Key included fear pesticides, fertilizers, hygiene in/around outlets, unhygienic vendor practices household storage/preparation methods. These may reduce consumption animal sourced fresh fruit vegetables; increase starchy staples processed/packaged foods. Policies such as upgrading urban market infrastructure enhance safety, accompanied by nutrition education, lead increased accessibility, affordability appeal safe, nutrient-rich Thus, reducing packaged/processed a means mitigate risk; thereby contributing preventing foodborne disease multiple forms malnutrition.
