Household-Level Determinants of Participation in Forest Support Programmes in the Miombo Landscapes, Zambia

The need to protect forest resources from unsustainable, yet rational, human actions has attracted global attention. This is because smallholder dependence on forests can degrade and cause deforestation. While efforts understand programmes motivations have increased in recent decades, there remains a limited understanding of household factors affecting participation support programmes, especially the context high-pressure areas, such as Miombo woodlands. study was conducted North-Western, Copperbelt Eastern Province Zambia. In each province, we selected landscapes consisting protected non-protected areas. We administered structured interviews 1123 households used logistic regression estimate determinants participation. found that better education, landholding size, share income, cash crops non-farm access markets negative impact programmes. Being located with areas positively associated suggest that, order increase participation, should focus low levels livelihood opportunities, poor markets. Besides, provide incentives, including for farm inputs at same time encourage reforestation agroforestry methods.
