Hot Rolling of Magnesium Single Crystals

To analyze the effect of initial orientation in activity twinning and texture development, magnesium single crystals were rolled at 400 °C (nominal furnace temperature) two specific orientations. In both orientations, rolling direction sheet (RD) was parallel to c-axis. For 1, 112¯0 normal (ND), for 2, it 101¯0 direction. The samples 30%, 50% 80% thickness reduction. After rolling, all quenched water retain microstructure. microstructure evolution characterized by X-ray diffraction Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). turned into polycrystals, where most grains had their c-axis almost ND, this reorientation explained extension twinning. active twin variants 1 aligned basal plane ~30° from caused a weaker compared plane. Strain localization inside contraction twins observed, consequently, non-basal nucleated these weakened final only 1.
