Horticultural plant use as a so‐far neglected pillar of ex situ conservation

چکیده
We demonstrate how native and nonnative plant taxa used as ornamentals in private public urban green spaces can significantly strengthen conservation time of extinctions by expanding the capacity for ex situ living collections raising awareness among professional gardeners collectors. Based on global databases, we document current representation threatened horticulture compared to botanical gardens. A substantial number are already gardening, however, there is great unused potential—especially reach high enough genetic diversity material reintroduction restoration programs. Considering greening an integral part strategies provide critically needed additional space human resources collections, while increasing often low genetic, species phylogenetic many newly established plantings that make them vulnerable climate change disease risks.

“The Ex Situ Conservation of Stinking Cedar”
The propagation of plants for food, timber, medicines and aesthetics has been a principal activity of man for millennia. However, the systematic propagation of plant material for the purposes of conservation has a recent history, probably dating back only a few decades. The propagation and distribution of Torreya taxifolia from wild collected, documented material is one of the largest projects ...

Site-based and cross-regional habitat and species conservation e!orts in Madagascar, such as proposed in the previous chapters of this Lemur Conservation Strategy, should always be the main focus of lemur conservation. However, with many wild lemur populations rapidly declining and their habitat being lost at constantly high rates, captive assurance colonies are becoming increasingly important,...
متن کاملThe neglected pillar of material computation
Many novel forms of computational material have been suggested, from using slime moulds to solve graph searching problems, to using packaging foam to solve differential equations. I argue that attempting to force such novel approaches into the conventional Universal Turing computational framework will provide neither insights into theoretical questions of computation, nor more powerful computat...
متن کاملUse of Plant Pathogens as Bioherbicides to Manage Weeds in Horticultural Crops
Certain fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens can be mass-produced and used as biological herbicides to control weeds in crops. This approach, referred to as the “bioherbicide” or the “inundative” biological control strategy, is based on our ability to manipulate certain weed-pathogen systems to cause highly damaging levels of disease epidemics during critical periods of weed interference and ...
