Honeybee workers with higher reproductive potential have a greater learning ability

چکیده

Abstract Learning ability, which allows individuals to adjust their behaviour changing environmental conditions, has a considerable positive impact on individual fitness. However, in addition benefits, learning also incurs cost, means that investment and maintaining learned skills can lead trade-offs impacting other biological functions. Here, we tested whether trade-off exists between reproductive potential honeybee workers. For this purpose, compared ability two groups of workers differed potential—normal rebel The results showed with high (rebels), measured according the number ovarioles ovary, faster than normal low potential. Moreover, by performing separate regression analyses within non-rebel worker groups, found was positively correlated ability. show honeybees, there is no resource allocation costly functions, reproduction.

Genome-wide analysis of alternative reproductive phenotypes in honeybee workers.

A defining feature of social insects is the reproductive division of labour, in which workers usually forego all reproduction to help their mother queen to reproduce. However, little is known about the molecular basis of this spectacular form of altruism. Here, we compared gene expression patterns between nonreproductive, altruistic workers and reproductive, non-altruistic workers in queenless ...

Male House Finches with Elaborate Songs have Higher Reproductive Performance

For territorial animals, vocal signals can play an important role in both territory defense and mate attraction. The elaborate songs of many male songbirds (order: Passeriformes) serve these dual functions (Catchpole & Slater 1995; Collins 2004). In non-territorial songbirds, however, the adaptive significance of song is poorly understood. Sexual selection through female choice is expected to b...

Species With Greater Aerial Maneuverability Have Higher Frequency of Collisions With Aircraft: A Comparative Study

Antipredator responses may appear unsuccessful when animals are exposed to approaching vehicles, often resulting inmortality. Recent studies have addressedwhether certain biological traits are associated with variation in collision risk with cars, but not with higher speed-vehicles like aircraft. Our goal was to establish the association between different species traits (i.e., body mass, eye si...

Senescence and learning in honeybee (Apis mellifera) workers.

Foraging by honeybee workers was investigated from the moment of the first foraging flight until death. To minimise the influence of factors other than senescence the foragers were trained to collect food from an artificial flower close to their hive. During each foraging trip the workers repeatedly visited an artificial flower, collecting one microlitre of 50% sugar solution per visit. During ...

Alternative splicing of a single transcription factor drives selfish reproductive behavior in honeybee workers (Apis mellifera).

In eusocial insects the production of daughters is generally restricted to mated queens, and unmated workers are functionally sterile. The evolution of this worker sterility has been plausibly explained by kin selection theory [Hamilton W (1964) J Theor Biol 7:1-52], and many traits have evolved to prevent conflict over reproduction among the females in an insect colony. In honeybees (Apis mell...
