Heisenberg Groups and Algebraic Topology

We study the Madsen-Tillmann spectrum CP∞ −1 as a quotient of the Mahowald pro-object CP∞ −∞ , which is closely related to the Tate cohomology of circle actions. That theory has an associated symplectic structure, whose symmetries define the Virasoro operations on the cohomology of moduli space constructed by Kontsevich and Witten.

The Sasakian Geometry of the Heisenberg Group

In this note I study the Sasakian geometry associated to the standard CR structure on the Heisenberg group, and prove that the Sasaki cone coincides with the set of extremal Sasakian structures. Moreover, the scalar curvature of these extremal metrics is constant if and only if the metric has Φsectional curvature −3. I also briefly discuss some relations with the well-know sub-Riemannian geomet...

Automorphisms of the Discrete Heisenberg Group

This note describes some computational results that were obtained while studying the associated group of automorphisms Aut(H), [2]. Specifically, we give an explicit description of a splitting of this group as an extension of GL(2,Z) by Z. That such a splitting exists could, in principle, be shown by computing a 2-cocycle for the extension and showing that it represents 0 in the cohomology grou...

Geometric Aspects of the Heisenberg Group

I provide a background of groups viewed as metric spaces to introduce the notion of asymptotic dimension of a group. I analyze the asymptotic dimension of Z ⊕ Z and the free group on two generators to better understand the concept of asymptotic dimension. The asymptotic dimension of the Heisenberg group, H, asdimH, has been shown to be three using advanced mathematics. I will try to show that a...
