HLA antigens in coeliac disease associated with malignancy.

Coeliac patients are at greater risk than the general population of developing malignant neoplasms, particularly lymphomas. The establishment at the Clinical Research Centre of a national collaborative study of coeliac patients with malignancy provided the opportunity to carry out HLA typing for 55 HLA-A, B and C and the 10 recognised DR antigens on a group of coeliac patients with malignancy. ...

HLA antigens and atopy in children with coeliac disease.

HLA antigens and various aspects of atopy were studied in 42 Finnish children and adolescents with coeliac disease, and the results were compared with findings of recent population studies. The HLA associations were as expected: relative risks for coeliac disease in individuals with HLA-B8, DR3, and DR7 were 8 . 0, 18 . 6, and 15 . 0, respectively. Children with coeliac disease were significant...

HLA type of patients with coeliac disease and malignancy in the west of Ireland.

HLA, A, B, and DR typing was done on seven of 10 patients with lymphoma, and six patients with carcinoma, all of whom had a flat small intestinal mucosa. Sixty-nine per cent (nine of 13) had HLA B8 and 71% (five of seven) had DR3. The corresponding levels for the local coeliac population are 76% and 84% respectively and the local non-coeliac population 43% and 44%. Two of the patients with lymp...

Malignancy and adult coeliac disease.

The suggestion has been made that malignancy anywhere in the body may be accompanied by intestinal mucosal changes similar to those found in adult coeliac disease (Creamer, 1964). The following case report indicates that characteristic jejunal mucosal changes, once reverted to normal by a gluten-free diet, do not reappear if a malignancy develops, providing that the gluten-free diet is maintained.

Malignancy in relatives of patients with coeliac disease.

A survey of 1329 relatives of 139 patients with coeliac disease demonstrated an overall increase of cancer deaths particularly in women, but this did not quite reach 5 percent significance in men. Evidence is insufficient to determine whether this was due to the occurrence of cancer in relatives with undetected coeliac disease or to the operation of independent factors.
