Epidemiology of Enterocytozoon bieneusi Infection in Humans
A review was conducted to examine published works that focus on the complex epidemiology of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in humans. Studies on the prevalence of these emerging microsporidian pathogens in humans, in developed and developing countries, the different clinical spectra of E. bieneusi intestinal infection in children, in different settings, and the risk factors associated with E...
متن کاملThe first case of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in Poland.
Microsporidia are intracellular parasites that cause opportunistic infections in humans of various immunological status. Only a few case reports exist on microsporidial infection in solid organ transplant recipients worldwide. The presented study demonstrates the first case in Poland of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in a liver transplant patient. Parasites were diagnosed in stool samples us...
متن کاملEvidence of different Enterocytozoon bieneusi genotypes in patients with and without human immunodeficiency virus infection.
We classified 100 Enterocytozoon bieneusi isolates into five genotypes by a PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Type I strains were encountered only in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, whereas type II strains were more frequently found in non-HIV-infected patients (75 versus 10%, respectively; P < 10(-4)), suggesting differences in the epidemiology of E. bi...
متن کاملSeropositivity for Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Czech Republic.
To determine seropositivity for Enterocytozoon bieneusi in the Czech Republic, we tested 115 serum samples from various groups. We found that 20% from HIV-positive persons, 33% from persons with occupational exposure to animals, and 10% from healthy persons were positive by indirect immunofluorescence assay. Proteins of 32 kDa were detected in serum samples from seropositive persons.

Contamination of Enterocytozoon bieneusi Desportes, Charpentier, Galian, Bernard, Cochand-Priollet, Laverne, Ravisse, et Modigliani, 1985 in water sources may cause outbreaks of microsporidiosis. To examine the occurrence of E. bieneusi, 108 raw wastewater samples were collected from three wastewater treated plants in Zhengzhou, China. In total, 46 samples were PCR positive for E. bieneusi.
