Histomorphometrical changes in intestine structure and innervation following experimental fumonisins intoxication in male Wistar rats

Fumonisins are highly toxic metabolites produced by Fusarium proliferatum and verticillioides. Little is known about the effects of a chronic low level fumonisins on intestinal structure innervation in monogastric animals, even though intestine first organ exposed to fumonisins. The influence most prevalent strains fumonisins, FB1 FB2, liver morphology, enteric nervous system epithelial cell prolif- eration was investigated an experimental rat model fumonisin intoxication. Adolescent (5-weeks-old), male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control group (C group) not treated with or intoxicated (FB group). together FB2 daily administered intragastrically at dose 90 mg/kg body weight for 21 days. damaging effect assessed determination activity ALAT AspAT. Samples from small intes- tine taken blood samples collected determine gamma- -glutamyl transferase (GGT) amylase. exposure FBs resulted histopathological degenerative alterations hepatocytes, including mild vacuolar degeneration ballooning. FB also duodenum jejunum, where significant changes proliferation, collagen wall fibres observed. Taken together, results obtained strengthen hypothesis that could induce damage, damage may have consequences general health.
