High Resolution Tip/Tilt Near-Infrared Imaging of Warm Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We present high spatial resolution (FWHM ≈ 0.3–0.5) H (1.6μm) and K (2.1μm) images of a complete sample (12) of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) chosen to have “warm” mid-infrared colors (f25/f60 > 0.2) known to be characteristic of active galaxies. The extended underlying galaxy is detected in each system at H and K , as are tidal features and many of the star forming knots seen at opti...
متن کاملStis Ultraviolet/optical Spectroscopy of 'warm' Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We present high spatial resolution ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy, obtained using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope, of nuclear structures within four 'warm' Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We find an AGN in at least three, and probably all four of our sample, hosted in a compact, optically luminous 'knot'. In three cases these knots we...
متن کاملSpitzer Mid-Infrared Imaging of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We have observed 14 nearby (z < 0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6—24μm. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.
متن کاملUltraluminous Infrared Galaxies
The IRAS survey of the local universe (z_0.1) has revealed the existence of a class of ultraluminous infrared galaxies with L(8-1000#m) > 1012L® that are slightly more numerous, and as luminous as optically selected quasars at similar redshift. Optical CCD images of these infrared galaxies show that nearly all are advanced mergers. Millimeter-wave CO (1 _ 0) observations indicate that these int...
متن کاملUltraluminous Infrared Galaxies
Ever since their discovery in the 1970’s, UltraLuminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRGs; classically Lir > 10 12L⊙) have fascinated astronomers with their immense luminosities, and frustrated them due to their singularly opaque nature, almost in equal measure. Over the last decade, however, comprehensive observations from the X-ray through to the radio have produced a consensus picture of local ULIRG...
