Higher order factors of sound symbolism

چکیده
Sound symbolism refers to associations between certain language sounds (i.e., phonemes) and perceptual and/or semantic properties. Crucially, the different of a phoneme do not appear be wholly independent. For instance, /i/ is associated with sharpness, smallness brightness. Previous work has shown that these properties are all related one another (Walker et al., 2012). This suggests higher order factors may underlie sound symbolic associations. In Experiment 1 we measured 25 phonemes found clustered according of: activity, valence, potency novelty. addition, were go along factors. Then, in Experiments 2a 2b, demonstrated can play role abstract shape stimuli. Together results characterize contribute our understanding mechanisms underlying symbolism.

Sound Symbolism
Sound symbolism is the term for a hypothesized systematic relationship between sound and meaning (Hinton, Nichols, & Ohala 1994). The idea that there might be a non-arbitrary relationship between the physical aspect of a speech signal and its meaning is quite an old idea, dating back at least to the time of Plato who, in his work Cratylus, had Socrates debating with two pupils the issue of whet...

Studies of sound symbolism have shown that people can associate sound and meaning in consistent ways when presented with maximally contrastive stimulus pairs of nonwords such as bouba/kiki (rounded/sharp) or mil/mal (small/big). Recent work has shown the effect extends to antonymic words from natural languages and has proposed a role for shared cross-modal correspondences in biasing formto-mean...
متن کاملSouth Siberian Sound Symbolism
South Siberian Turkic languages are rich in sound symbolic subsystems, both in their lexica and in the productive morphophonology, but these systems remain to be adequately documented. This paper presents new field data on sound symbolism in two South Siberian Turkic languages: Tofa(lar) and Tuvan (including the unwritten Tsengel and Hovd dialects spoken in Mongolia). Sound symbolic word format...
متن کاملSound Symbolism in Basic Vocabulary
The relationship between meanings of words and their sound shapes is to a large extent arbitrary, but it is well known that languages exhibit sound symbolism effects violating arbitrariness. Evidence for sound symbolism is typically anecdotal, however. Here we present a systematic approach. Using a selection of basic vocabulary in nearly one half of the world’s languages we find commonalities a...
متن کاملTsur Size – Sound Symbolism Revisited
In many of my writings I have argued that poetic images have no fixed predetermined meanings. In my 1992 book What Makes Sound Patterns Expressive?—The Poetic Mode of Speech Perception (originally published in 1987) I propounded the view that speech sounds do not have fixed predetermined symbolic values either.1 Poetic images as well as speech sounds are clusters of features, each of which may ...
