High‐Energy Radiation From Natural Lightning Observed in Coincidence With a VHF Broadband Interferometer

This work presents the first simultaneous X-ray measurements from natural lightning in coincidence with a very high frequency (VHF) broadband interferometer. During an observational campaign north-central Colombia, five intense bursts were detected negative stepped leaders and two emissions dart leader. Thanks to angular time resolution of interferometer, it was possible locate origin high-energy radiation during leader propagation. We study correlation VHF pulses two-dimensional speed channels. A strong temporal correspondence has been observed between most pulses, which suggests runaway electrons as shared mechanism. The observations show that burst can have multiple sources belonging different branches, be several hundreds meters apart. Therefore, spatial point view, not unique searched, but extensive should considered. hypothesize similar conclusions particular for downward TGFs maybe general.
