چکیده
Small satellites have challenging size weight and power requirements for communications modules, which we address here by using chip-scale light-emitting diode (LED) transmitters single-photon avalanche receivers. Data rates of 100 Mb/s been demonstrated at a sensitivity ?55.2 dBm, simulations with supporting experimental work indicate ranges in excess 1 km are feasible directional gain up to 52 dBi comparatively modest pointing requirements. A 750 m, 20 link single micro-LED has experimentally. The low electrical compact, semiconductor nature these devices offer high data rate, small satellite platforms.

Single photon detector with high polarization sensitivity
Polarization is one of the key parameters of light. Most optical detectors are intensity detectors that are insensitive to the polarization of light. A superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) is naturally sensitive to polarization due to its nanowire structure. Previous studies focused on producing a polarization-insensitive SNSPD. In this study, by adjusting the width and pitch...
متن کامل1.25-Gbit/s photon-counting optical communications using a two- element superconducting nanowire single photon detector
The sensitivity of a high-rate photon-counting optical communications link depends on the performance of the photon counter used to detect the optical signal. In this paper, we focus on ways to reduce the effect of blocking, which is loss due to time periods in which the photon counter is inactive following a preceding detection event. This blocking loss can be reduced by using an array of phot...

متن کاملPicosecond superconducting single-photon optical detector
We experimentally demonstrate a supercurrent-assisted, hotspot-formation mechanism for ultrafast detection and counting of visible and infrared photons. A photon-induced hotspot leads to a temporary formation of a resistive barrier across the superconducting sensor strip and results in an easily measurable voltage pulse. Subsequent hotspot healing in ;30 ps time frame, restores the superconduct...
متن کاملTowards large scale CMOS single-photon detector arrays for lab-on-chip applications
Single-photon detection is useful in many domains requiring time-resolved imaging, high sensitivity and high dynamic range. In this paper the miniaturization and performance potential of solid-state single-photon detectors are discussed in the context of lab-on-chip applications where high accuracy and/or high levels of parallelism are suited. Technological and design trade-offs are discussed i...
