High-quality Strong Lens Candidates in the Final Kilo-Degree Survey Footprint

چکیده

We present 97 new high-quality strong lensing candidates found in the final $\sim 350\,\rm deg^2$, that completed full 1350\,\rm deg^2$ area of Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Together with our previous findings, list from KiDS sums up to 268 systems. The sample is assembled using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier applied $r$-band (best seeing) and $g,~r,~i$ color-composited images separately. This optimizes complementarity morphology color information on identification candidates. apply classifiers luminous red galaxies (LRGs) bright (BGs) select received high probability be lens CNN ($P_{\rm CNN}$). In particular, setting $P_{\rm CNN}>0.8$ for LRGs, $1$-band predicts 1213 candidates, while $3$-band yields 1299 only $\sim$30\% overlap. For BGs, order minimize false positives, we adopt more conservative threshold, CNN} >0.9$, both classifiers. results 3740 newly selected objects. two samples are visually inspected by 7 co-authors finally "high-quality" which mean scores larger than 6 (on scale 0 10). discuss effect seeing accuracy classification possible avenues increase efficiency multi-band classifiers, preparation next-generation surveys ground space.

The Kilo-Degree Survey

The Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) is a 1500 square degree optical imaging survey with the recently commissioned OmegaCAM wide-field imager on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). A suite of data products will be delivered to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the community by the KiDS survey team. Spread over Europe, the KiDS team uses AstroWISE as its main tool to collaborate efficiently and p...

Selection constraints on high redshift quasar searches in the VISTA kilo-degree infrared galaxy survey

The European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) is a 4-m class survey telescope for wide-field nearinfrared imaging. VISTA is currently running a suite of six public surveys, which will shortly deliver their first Europe wide public data releases to ESO. The VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy Survey (VIKING) forms a natural intermediate betwe...

The SNAP Strong Lens Survey

Basic considerations of lens detection and identification indicate that a wide field survey of the types planned for weak lensing and Type Ia SNe with SNAP are close to optimal for the optical detection of strong lenses. Such a “piggy-back” survey might be expected even pessimistically to provide a catalogue of a few thousand new strong lenses, with the numbers dominated by systems of faint blu...

Strong Gravitational Lens Candidates in the Goods Acs Fields

We present results from a systematic search for strong gravitational lenses in the GOODS ACS data. The search technique involves creating a sample of likely lensing galaxies, which we define as massive early-type galaxies in a redshift range 0.3 < z < 1.3. The target galaxies are selected by color and magnitude, giving a sample of 1092 galaxies. For each galaxy in the sample, we subtract a smoo...

DISCOVERY OF THREE z > 6.5 QUASARS IN THE VISTA KILO-DEGREE INFRARED GALAXY (VIKING) SURVEY

Studying quasars at the highest redshifts can constrain models of galaxy and black hole formation, and it also probes the intergalactic medium in the early universe. Optical surveys have to date discovered more than 60 quasars up to z 6.4, a limit set by the use of the z-band and CCD detectors. Only one z 6.4 quasar has been discovered, namely the z = 7.08 quasar ULAS J1120+0641, using near-inf...
