High-performance, two-step/Bi-enzyme lactate biofuel cell with lactate oxidase and pyruvate oxidase

The performance of biofuel cells (BFCs) depends on the number electrons that can be harvested from one fuel molecule by bioanode, as well many other factors. Regular, one-enzyme bioanodes usually harvest two per molecule, lowering conversion efficiency chemical energy stored in to electrical energy. In this study, we successfully develop a high-performance BFC with two-enzyme bioanode four oxidizing lactate acetylphosphate through two-step enzymatic reaction uses oxidase (LOx) and pyruvate (POx). A current 1 mA is obtained for 2500 s, only slight decrease cell voltage, reaching 0 V at 3010 s. During time, total 1253 mJ harvested. This approximately 1.8-fold time double corresponding one-enzyme-bioanode employing LOx, thus confirming twice are molecule.
