High liquidity creation and bank failures

چکیده
We formulate the “High Liquidity Creation Hypothesis” (HLCH) that a proliferation in core activity of bank liquidity creation increases failure probability. test HLCH context Russian banking, where many failures occurred albeit not triggered by swings business cycles or an exogenous shock such as crisis. Using Berger and Bouwman (2009) measures, we find high is associated with greater probability this finding survives multiple robustness checks. Our results suggest regulatory authorities can mitigate systemic distress reduce costs to society from through early identification creators.

Systemic Funding Liquidity Risk and Bank Failures
We examine the roles of idiosyncratic and systemic funding liquidity risks in bank failures. We estimate a discrete-time hazard model of bank failure using data of U.S. commercial banks between 1985 and 2004, and examine its out-of-sample forecasting performance between 2005 and 2011. The out-of-sample performance comparison shows this model outperforms typical bank failure prediction models. W...
متن کاملBank Liquidity and Bank Performance: Looking for a Nonlinear Nexus
Liquid assets are critical for banking operations. They guarantee avoiding liquidity risk and widens managerial decision options to invest in emerging profitable projects; however, holding extra liquidity entails opportunity costs. Accordingly, empirical literature does not provide a conclusive relationship between liquidity and profitability. The purpose of this research is to analyze the asym...
متن کاملBank mergers, competition and liquidity
We provide a model of the impact of bank mergers on loan competition, individual reserve management and aggregate liquidity risk. Banks hold reserves against liquidity shocks, refinance in the interbank market and compete in a differentiated loan market. A merger creates an internal money market that induces financial cost advantages and may increase reserve holdings. We assess the liquidity ri...

This paper examines the impact of internal bank governance on bank liquidity creation in Iran during 2010-2017. We analyze whether banks with larger size and liquidity levels creates higher levels of liquidity. The results using panel GMM method show that corporate governance has a positive effect on liquidity creation; of course, it is not significant. Also, this effect is not affecting by ban...
متن کاملBank Failures Caused by Large Withdrawals: An Explanation Based Purely on Liquidity∗
In a version of the Diamond and Dybvig [8] model with aggregate uncertainty, we show that there exists an equilibrium with the following properties: all consumers deposit at the bank, all patient consumers wait for the last period to withdraw, and the bank fails with strictly positive probability. Furthermore, we show that the probability of a bank failure remains bounded away from zero as the ...
