High Larval Concentrations and Onshore Transport of Barnacle Cyprids Associated With Thermal Stratification

چکیده

To better understand the hydrodynamic and hydrographic conditions experienced by larvae in nearshore (within 1 km of shore), role that larval behavior plays mediating shoreward transport to adult benthic habitats, we examined vertical distribution concentration barnacle cyprids a shallow, region southern California, United States. We collected high-resolution physical measurements currents temperature at 3 stations (8, 5, 4 m depths), high-frequency deep station ∼300 from shore. Larvae were sampled distinct depth intervals between surface bottom (0–1 m, 1–2 2–3 m-bottom), each hour for overnight periods ranged 13 24 h five cruises during summers 2017 2018. Barnacle Chthamalus fissus predominated all samples. Thermal stratification decreased closer shore, but when nearshore-most remained stratified (Δ°C –1 ≥ 0.1), C. cyprid concentrations high extremely abundant (exceeding 200 4,000 individuals –3 , respectively). There significant positive correlations thermal log-transformed cruise-to-cruise scales, variability cross-shore 2-day scales. Additionally, estimated was relatively greatest. Significant, albeit small, diel differences distributions also observed, with proportion increasing near night, greater day than night. Collectively, these results suggest increases supply nearshore, may enhance onshore augment chances successful settlement recruitment intertidal habitat.

Classification of the pre-settlement behaviour of barnacle cyprids.

Barnacle cyprids exhibit a complex swimming and exploratory behaviour on surfaces and settlement is a consequence of extensive surface probing and selection of suitable settlement sites. In this work, the behaviour of cyprids in their pre-settlement phase was studied by three-dimensional video stereoscopy. With this technique, three-dimensional trajectories were obtained that were quantitativel...

Presence and distribution of serotonin immunoreactivity in the cyprids of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite.

In this work, the presence and distribution of serotonin in the cyprid of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite were investigated by immunohistochemical methods. Serotonin-like immuno-reactive neuronal cell bodies were detected in the central nervous system only. Various clusters of immunoreactive neuronal cell bodies are distributed in the brain (protocerebrum, deutocerebrum, optical lobes), and at ...

Swimming behavior and velocities of barnacle cyprids in a downwelling flume

It has been proposed that barnacle cyprids can maintain position in shorewardpropagating fronts by swimming upward against a downwelling flow, potentially mediating onshore transport of larvae toward intertidal habitat. This study developed a novel flume to characterize swimming behavior of barnacle cyprids in a laboratory downwelling flow. Seawater was pumped through a cylindrical observation ...

Three Dimensional Tracking of Exploratory Behavior of Barnacle Cyprids Using Stereoscopy

Surface exploration is a key step in the colonization of surfaces by sessile marine biofoulers. As many biofouling organisms can delay settlement until a suitable surface is encountered, colonization can comprise surface exploration and intermittent swimming. As such, the process is best followed in three dimensions. Here we present a low-cost transportable stereoscopic system consisting of two...

Larval metamorphosis of the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite under mono and mixed algal diet

Barnacles are one of the dominant macrofouling organisms found in the intertidal region throughout the word. In this study, the effects of mono and mixed algal diet (Chaetoceros calcitrans, C. muelleri, Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica and Chlorella vulgaris) on the larval metamorphosis of the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite were evaluated. Larvae obtained from A. amphitrite were cultur...
