High-frequency sea-level analysis: Global distributions

چکیده

This paper provides global climatology of high-frequency (T < 2 h) sea-level oscillations atmospheric origin. Sea-level series with a temporal resolution 1 min from 331 tide gauges in the world ocean and spanning between 1.5 12 years were analysed to determine typical ranges, seasons characteristics moderate extreme manifestations nonseismic at tsunami timescales (NSLOTTs). Variances these reach 6.6 cm2 on average, but their region-averaged (99.99th percentile) ranges may exceed half metre or more individual hotspot locations. The NSLOTTs are highest mid-latitudes decrease towards polar tropical regions. Moderate show clear winter maxima majority stations, while less pronounced pattern is evident for most oscillations, which occur throughout year. A total 3080 prominent NSLOTT events selected 308 stations compared background revealing substantial capability energy amplification during events. Synchronicity neighbouring (up 250 km) has been detected 20–32% all episodes, suggesting possible connectivity episodes.

Global sea level linked to global temperature.

We propose a simple relationship linking global sea-level variations on time scales of decades to centuries to global mean temperature. This relationship is tested on synthetic data from a global climate model for the past millennium and the next century. When applied to observed data of sea level and temperature for 1880-2000, and taking into account known anthropogenic hydrologic contribution...

GIS Analysis of Global Impacts from Sea Level Rise

Future sea level rise caused by climate change would disrupt the physical processes, economic activities, and social systems in coastal regions. Based on a hypothetical global sea level increase of one to six meters, we developed GIS methods to assess and visualize the global impacts of potential inundation using the best available global datasets. After susceptible areas were delineated, we es...

Low-frequency Atlantic sea level variability

The control run of the Hadley Centre-coupled climate model (HadCM3) is used to establish the sources of multidecadal/ centennial sea level (SL) variations in the northwest Atlantic. It is shown that variations in the sea level for the largest part of this area are related to variations in the thermohaline structure of the upper (c 500 m) part of the ocean. Temperature variations dominate steric...
