چکیده
While hanging nets may have fewer overall environmental impacts than towed gears, they still catch unwanted species and sizes, which are then discarded. Gillnets one of the most common types used in Mediterranean small-scale fisheries, with commercial catches discards containing a diverse range fish invertebrate species. In this study, profile gillnets Thermaikos Gulf (NE Mediterranean) was analyzed focus on discarding unfavorable conservation status, such as Mediterranean-endemic scleractinian coral Cladocora caespitosa, is listed endangered due to declining population sizes. Our survey conducted over two seasons (May October 2020 2021) included 69 fishing trials under realistic conditions. general, exhibited relatively low ratio (17.2%; 7.1% when only were considered) prevalence capture intensity or threatened species; during entire survey, chondrichthyan captured (1 specimen Raja radula), while out 54 vulnerable IUCN status. These advantages offset part by high catchability C. caespitosa colonies, occurred 61% hauls accounted for 53% total biomass 30% discarded biomass. The likelihood hauling living colonies higher known beds (81% vs. 43%), probability any state 18% beds, suggesting that frequently detach from seafloor, dispersed larger area fragments probably survival potential. findings highlight importance identifying so fishermen avoid setting their these areas, provided well-informed educated about ecological significance endemic, threatened, ecologically important

متن کاملCorrelation between pollution and decline of Scleractinian Cladocora caespitosa (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Gabes
During an expedition in 2014 in the Gulf of Gabes that aimed to evaluate the impact of the pollution of the phosphate industry on the marine environment, numerous dead coral fragments were retrieved from several stations along a 18 km long transect in front of the industry complex of Gabes. Detailed taxonomy of these coral fragments shows clearly that all fragments belong to the species Cladoco...
متن کاملCo-variation between autotrophy and heterotrophy in the Mediterranean coral Cladocora caespitosa.
This study quantifies the relative contributions of autotrophy and heterotrophy to the energy budget of the temperate scleractinian species Cladocora caespitosa Linnaeus 1767. Colonies were incubated under different light and feeding regimes, and changes in carbon acquisition through photosynthesis and feeding were measured during a 2-month time period. This approach allowed us to quantify the ...
متن کاملControlling Effects of Irradiance and Heterotrophy on Carbon Translocation in the Temperate Coral Cladocora caespitosa
Temperate symbiotic corals, such as the Mediterranean species Cladocora caespitosa, live in seasonally changing environments, where irradiance can be ten times higher in summer than winter. These corals shift from autotrophy in summer to heterotrophy in winter in response to light limitation of the symbiont's photosynthesis. In this study, we determined the autotrophic carbon budget under diffe...
متن کاملImplications of Bycatch, Discards, and Size Limits on Reference Points in the Pacific Halibut Fishery
The current harvest policy for the Pacific halibut fishery uses a 32-inch minimum size limit in the directed commercial fishery, and total annual catches in each of the eight regulatory areas are based on area-specific exploitation rate targets. In nondirected fisheries retention of halibut is prohibited. Post-release survival rates are gear dependent and partially based on observer accounts of...
